They're the Chosen—Winchester, Remington and Colt—brothers trained to hunt down supernatural beings using the latest steam-powered gadgetry. It's a hard legacy to shoulder, and it's about to get a lot more dangerous...
A Devil Of A Job
Colt Jackson has gotten his name on many a wanted poster with success in the family business: hunting supernaturals across the frontier. Lately, though, there's a sulfur stink in the wind and the Darkin population is exploding. A rift in the worlds is appearing. To close it, Colt will have to do the unthinkable and work with a demon to pass arcane boundaries no human alone can cross.
Except when he summons his demon, he doesn't get some horned monstrosity: he gets a curvy redheaded succubus named Lilly, who's willing to make a bargain to become human again. He also gets Lilly's secret expertise on the machinations on the dark side of the rift. And her charm and cleverness help to get them out of what his silver-loaded pistol and mechanical horse can't. Of course, when all hell breaks loose, he might have to sacrifice his soul. But what's adventure without a little risk?
"Meyers puts the steam in steampunk." —Cherry Adair
Welcome to the world of Indian Jones meets Wild, Wild West. A 1800s western setting with a healthy intermixing of action, paranormal creatures, sweet romance, and steampunk all come together to create one hell of a great story in THE HUNTER.
Normally I've shied away from the steampunk genre (despite my curiosity and love of science fiction), but when I was offered a chance to read this book, something sparked a desire to delve into this first book of a new series by Theresa Meyers. And I'm so glad that I did!
Colt Ambrose Jackson: Hero; Dark and Driven; Darkin Hunter; A Chosen. Determined to fulfill his unwanted -- yet necessary, obligated, destiny-driven role as a Hunter -- Colt embarks on the first leg of the journey to find one -- if not all three -- pieces of the Book of Legend. The book, that is part of Colt's and his two older brothers' destiny, that when all three pieces are put together, will close the Gate's of Nyx and rid the world of evil.
Battling the archdemon, Rathe, is only one of Colt's problems. He's just summoned the help of one sexy demon to help him in his journey of finding his section of the book. Outside of the fact that the Hunter has called upon the assistance of a demon, what makes matters worse is that she is none other then the sexy, red-haired succubus, Lilly Arliss.
Theresa Meyers creates a fantastic story set against the backdrop of western saloons and dirty and far away places, seamlessly woven amidst paranormal demons, shifters, and vampires. Throw in a wacky genius with a knack of creating scientific inventions to help assist Hunters in their attempt to rid the world of evil, and know you have paranormal, steampunk romance!
The writing style is full of detail but not overkill. You can see this alternative world unfold and the powerful attraction blossom between two completely opposite characters. Theresa adds a healthy dose of sexual tension, but little in the way of graphic sexual details. There's a lot of I-shouldn't-feel-like-this-but-I-do feelings going on, as well as a lot of internal battles that entail: it's-never-gonna-happen-no-matter-how-much-I-want-to-keep-them-for-the-rest-of-my-life. But, when love and the hero's and heroine's life is on the line, a theme of sacrifice starts to become apparent!
Secondary Characters add to driving the plot. One, the steampunk master himself, Marley. The maker of Colt's mechanical horse, Tempus, and all the other gadgets and gizmos that the geeky, scientist extraordinaire whips up to assist the Hunters in their battles against the Darkin. Secondly, Colt's brothers (and those that associate with them) and the antagonist himself, Rathe, play roles that keep the action moving along.
Colt's brothers, Winchester and Remington, the other two that make up the tri-pack, destiny obligated Chosen, make appearances, setting the stage for the additional books in the series -- especially book two which will be Winchester's story.
I highly recommend THE HUNTER to any steampunk fan, who likes their sexual tension heavy, with sweet romance and intimacy, lots of action (and I'm not talking the sexual kind *g*), paranormal creatures wanting to rule the world, Hunters who want to rid the world of them, and a geeky scientist hell-bent on creating the gadgets that will assist! Theresa has a style of writing that I truly enjoyed, good characters, and has set up a few unanswered questions to carry the story arc into the next installment of the series, THE SLAYER, book two of THE LEGEND CHRONICLES, which will feature Colt's brother Winchester and a vampire? :)

About Theresa Meyers:
Raised by a bibliophile who made the dining room into a library, Theresa has always been a lover of books and stories. First a writer for newspapers, then for national magazines, she started her first novel in high school, eventually enrolling in a Writer's Digest course and putting the book under the bed until she joined Romance Writers of America in 1993.
In 2005 she was selected as one of eleven finalists for the American Title II contest, the American Idol of books. She is married to the first man she ever went on a real date with (to their high school prom), who she knew was hero material when he suffered through having to let her parents drive, and her brother sit between them in the backseat of the car. They currently live in a Victorian house on a mini farm in the Pacific Northwest with their two children, three cats, an old chestnut Arabian gelding, an energetic mini-Aussie shepherd puppy, several rabbits, a dozen chickens and an out-of-control herb garden.
