Today I'm excited to have Virna DePaul, author of the new fabulous Chosen by Blood {Book #1, Para-Ops series}, here at Among the Muses to talk about, and share an excerpt from, this new super fantastic book! If you missed my review, please check it out. This is one of the best PNR books I've read! One of the things I had to say about Chosen by Blood was, "With each anticipatory flip of the page, readers are immersed in a world that is spectacularly envisioned and expertly executed in the writing. The perfect 'what if' paranormal story that seduces, captivates, then seduces some more!"
Without further delay, please welcome Virna DePaul to the blog!
~*~*~*~*~*~
First, I'd like to say, 'Congratulations!' on your paranormal romantic suspense, debut book, CHOSEN BY BLOOD; book #1 of the Para-Ops series! *throws confetti* The reviews have been fantastic! I can only imagine how happy you must be!
Can you tell readers a little bit about yourself and what got you started as a writer?
Thank you so much for having me here! I'm very excited about my debut launch. I’ve always been an avid reader. I majored in comparative literature in college and did a lot of writing as a lawyer, but I’ve read romance since I was twelve years old. I still have shelves of “keeper” books from my favorite authors, authors who sucked me into their worlds and characters, and helped me feel inspired and empowered. When I realized law wasn’t fulfilling me creatively, I finally decided to try and do what I’d always wanted—write a novel that would leave others feeling this way, too.
Does your career background play into the creation of your stories?
It has, yes. Being a criminal prosecutor gave me the background and confidence to start writing what I always loved--romantic suspense stories. My first manuscript was about an ambitious female district attorney with a dark past, so I was able to reveal what I knew about the criminal justice system and weave in intriguing evidentiary facts/scenarios that I’d encountered in the past. When I got the idea for combining a paranormal plot with a special ops team, the transition was fairly smooth. I could concentrate on creating a complex paranormal world and making my vampires, weres, and shape shifters a little different from what was out there.
The Para-Ops series has a setting of "five years after the Second Civil War ends, with humanlike creatures with superhuman DNA". What inspired Chosen by Blood, or more specifically, the Para-Ops series?
The notion of a nation recovering from war and working towards peace is obviously a timely one in today’s world. So is cultural prejudice. I wanted to write a series about a special ops team of supernatural creatures, one where the Others had just as many problems with each other as they did with humans. Because post-apocalyptic stories are in vogue, I also wanted to start the story on the brink of a tenuous peace, one that was going to flourish or fall based in part on the ability of the team members to overcome their own pasts and fears. The team obviously represents a microcosm of society, and through it I can explore issues like duty versus desire, the tension between pain and pleasure, and moving past fear even if you never completely lose it.
What supernatural creatures will we see in CHOSEN BY BLOOD and any future Para-Ops series novels?
The Para-Ops team is represented by a variety of supernatural creatures, including vampires, weres, wraiths, mages, and human psychics. In addition, there are other creatures that are less public, including shape shifters with a more alien-like exterior.
Could you give us a little backstory on the alpha hero of Chosen by Blood and who will be his perfect heroine? We are, after all, romance addicts! *grins*
I’m so glad you asked! Knox Devereaux is a dharmire, a half vampire/half human who is the son of the Vampire Queen and a traitorous human who informed humans how to kill vampires. He struggles to lead his clan, which is literally starving due to an FBI-engineered vaccine that changes the properties of human blood so it can’t nourish vamps. At the same time, he believes it’s only because of his human blood, the same human blood that his clan despises, that he’s strong enough to lead in the first place. He’s constantly trying to prove his loyalty to his people, and this means doing his duty to marry another vampire. The problem is he’s in love with a human female, Special Agent Felicia Locke, who refuses to be his mistress or share him with another female. When they are placed on the Para-Ops Team together, Knox hopes not only to find the antidote to the vaccine, but to convince Felicia to give up her human notions of morality. Little does he know she’s the one who’s going to be teaching him about the transformative power of love.
Your debut is in the paranormal romantic suspense genre, but it looks like you have some contemporary romance in store for us as well. Could you tell readers what else they should expect to see from you in the near future?
I’m so excited to be writing paranormals for Berkley, but also contemporary romantic suspense for Harlequin. My debut novel with Harlequin Romantic Suspense, Dangerous To Her, comes out in September 2011. It’s about an undercover cop who poses a bailiff in order to investigate a judge. He ends up reuniting with his college love and discovers she’s harbored a secret for almost a decade. I’ve also just sold another story to HRS about a woman who must accept the reopening of her mother’s murder investigation by the one man she hoped never to see again. Finally, in April of 2012, I’ll be launching a new series with HQN.
Am I pushing too much by asking if the next installment of Para-Ops has a name or release date yet?
Not at all! Chosen By Fate, Book 2 in the Para-Ops series, is about the team’s ghost, Wraith, and its human psychic Shaman, Caleb O’Flare. Wraith and Caleb first meet in Book 1 and their strong reactions to one another are the product of complex back stories. In their own ways, Wraith and Caleb have to deal with the tension between pain and pleasure, a dichotomy that is brought to the forefront when they set out on their next mission, investigating a series of crimes in the feline community.
Could you possibly leave us with a little teaser or excerpt from CHOSEN BY BLOOD? *crosses fingers*
Of course! I hope you enjoy it!
Special Agent Felicia Locke knew the minute she saw the willowy dharmire that there was going to be trouble. She’d chosen the bar because it was as far from Pennsylvania Avenue and the J. Edgar Hoover Building as one could get and still be in Washington, D.C. With its spray-painted façade, dim lights, and ramshackle assortment of tables and chairs, the Black Hole was also light-years away from what a typical federal agent would consider reputable, let alone palatable. In its favor was the fact it served the best brandy in the state, strong and undiluted. That and some privacy was all Felicia wanted.
She’d just locked her car and was walking toward the bar’s back entrance when a dharmire, who couldn’t have been more than sixteen years old, stumbled around the corner of the building and into view. Felicia immediately recognized the female as half-Other; although she had a vampire’s silver hair and black eyes, her skin was sun-toasted, just a shade lighter than a graham cracker. She clung to the arm of a stocky man with no neck, squinty eyes, and slicked-back hair. The man pushed her against the side of the building and covered her slim body with his own.
Felicia’s prediction of trouble formed not because the man was ugly, but because he was unkempt and, considering the foul things he was saying, obviously uncouth. She’d never met a vamp who’d willingly suffer the company of someone so appallingly unrefined. It would be like asking one to wear jeans or, God forbid, drive a beat-up old truck down a public highway. As a rule, vamps didn’t do casual or tacky. Even so, she tried telling herself that maybe the girl just looked young. There was no accounting for poor taste, after all. But the closer she got, the more apparent it became that the dharmire was under the influence. Her silver pupils were dilated and glassy, and she appeared to cling to the man out of necessity rather than affection.
The man shifted to the side just as Felicia walked within ten feet of them. She saw the fine gold chain and pendant around the dharmire’s neck—a smaller, more feminine version of the one Knox wore and an exact replica of the one Noella had worn all her life. The same pendant Felicia’s best friend had been wearing on the day she’d died, a gaping hole in her chest where her heart had once been.
Felicia came to an abrupt stop and blinked her eyes several times to make sure she wasn’t imagining it. But no, it was real and it was a real bitch of a sign. Noella had died exactly one year ago today and it couldn’t be coincidence that, before Felicia even had a chance to get rip-roaring drunk while avoiding Knox at the same time, a female appeared who was from Noella’s clan—Knox’s clan—and in obvious need of help.
Thoughts of Knox assailed her. Had Kyle Mahone gotten in touch with him? She’d been fully briefed on the Bureau’s plan to add a new team to the FBI’s elite, super-SWAT group referred to as the HRT, Hope Restored Team. She knew that team was the crucial step toward stabilizing relations between humans and the Otherborn races they’d once fought. And despite her preference to stay as separated from Knox as possible, she knew he was the right choice to lead it. Most civilians craved peace now, but it was a constant, often bloody battle given the insurgents, humans and Others alike, that resisted.
On the other hand, Felicia thought, still staring at the man and the dharmire . . . There would always be individuals who just naturally preyed on those weaker than themselves.
Okay, okay. Message received.
No rest for the wicked.
Now for some quickie responses…
My new release in seven words or less ... Special ops with fangs and sizzling romance
What I love to do outside of writing... Massages, Broadway musicals, traveling, and reading.
A few favorite romance authors of mine... Larissa Ione, JR Ward, Lori Foster, Linda Howard, Anne Stuart, Rhyannon Byrd and many, many more!
A favorite book I’ve read within the past year… Pleasure Unbound by Larissa Ione
My favorite type of hero… Dark and tortured but capable of tenderness and ultimately redeemable
My favorite type of heroine... Imperfect and vulnerable with a core of inner strength that she doubts, but not for long.
If I could be a paranormal creature, it would be ... One from Larissa Ione, JR Ward, or Rhyannon Byrd’s novels so long as I could hook up with one of their heroes!
A supernatural power I wish I had ... The power to heal.
My writing routine includes… Mad obsessive breaks from reality followed by an appreciation for family, friends and fine things (like regular meals!).
Something I always have to have near when writing... Movies and books and chocolate, oh my!
Pantser or plotster? Pantser with plotser tendencies.
If I wasn't a writer I'd be… An aspiring writer.
A place I’d love to visit… Hawaii
One thing I would love to try... LOL. Not sure I can say that on this site. Let’s just say it’s purely fantasy and I bet lots of your readers would love to try it, too.
Is there anything else you would like to tell readers?
I’m determined to make you love me (or rather, my stories). Hopefully it’ll be with my first book, or my next one, but if not, it’ll happen with one of them!

What a fabulous way to the start the week and celebrate my debut launch. Tanya, I can't thank you enough for having me here and for putting out the word about my book. I look forward to getting to know you and your readers this week!
GREAT interview!!! And I have to agree with you Virna I would totally choose a character from J.R Ward's books just to hook up with Zsadist. Aww I love that series.
What inspired you to write paranormal? I have always had a love for paranormal but what made you decide to write a paranormal romance instead of a YA?
Great interview I really enjoyed it :D

Awesome interview Virna totally brilliant !!

Thank you Kristen and Desere! Kristen, honestly what inspired me to write it was that paranormals were so hot, I'd come really close to selling contemporary romantic suspense but couldn't quite get over the hump, I realized-duh!--I LOVE reading paranormals so why not write one (Rhage, Butch, Zsadist, I'll pretty much "settle" for any one of them :)), and when I started brainstorming, I got REALLY excited about a book about a Para-Ops Team. I like sensuality and darkness in my novels, and I found paranormals gave me that without having to write a serial killer story (which I do like, as well, but I wanted some variety). Thanks for your question!
Good Morning Virna! Thanks for taking time to answer fan questions, here's my question: What qualities does Felicia have that you see in yourself and which of Felicia's qualities do you wish you had?

Thank you for the great inteview!!
You see so many lawyers turned writers!!! Wonder what this says about being a lawyer!! Either way makes for some good books!!!
Shannon Johnson
shannonjean14(at)gmail(dot)com
Hi Faith! Thanks for stopping by. I think Felicia comes off as "average" to most people but she's very complex. She's someone who has a strong sense of morals and wants to do the right thing, but she's also deeply passionate and wants to make the most of life, and this yearning can butt up against her sense of what's "right" or the 'responsible" thing to do. I'm pretty quiet--honestly, most people have no idea who I really am or that I am intensely passionate about many things. I think I'm a devoted friend but for me this means wanting to make a connection beyond the superficial with people, and honestly a lot of people are uncomfortable with that. Anyway, that's my take on Felicia. I like that she often takes people by surprise and I kinda get a kick out of it when I do, too. :)
Hi Katie W! Thanks for stopping by!
Shannon, half the lawyers I know are looking for a career change period. LOL! Personally, I think it's because practicing law walks a fine line between intellectually challenging work/honoring ones ideals about justice and having to "advocate" i.e., argue/debate your point. Lawyers are constantly having to support/prove their position and IMO, there aren't a lot of people in general who know how to do that in a civilized way.
Virna congratulations on your book. I can't wait to read it. It sounds like a really good book and series. I love reading about vampires and paranormal creatures. Please enter me in contest. Tore923@aol.com
Thank you, Tore! There are SO many great paranormal books out there. I hope you'll enjoy mine!
Great interview! Para-Ops series sounds amazing and I really like it is represented by a variety of supernatural creatures.
I love the excerpt of the book.
Thanks for the giveaway!

Hi Virna - I love dark complex characters and your story sounds like an amazing read.
I had to laugh over your comment that lawyers are always looking for their second career - definitely applies to most of the ones I know.

I look forward to getting my hand on Chosen by Blood when my indy bookseller calls. Great interview! I also look forward to meeting you next month. Ok um...just a little too stalkerish for Para Ops release day.
I love author interviews. I loved when Virna answered the question "What would you be if you weren't a writer?" with "An aspiring author." looking forward to reading this book!
andreat78@yahoo.com
Congratulations this morning Miss Virna!!! My question to you is.....Do you feel different today, with it being release day and all? Nervous? Excited? All of the above? You don't have to try hard to make us love ya darlin'....that comes naturally...but I'm a bit biased -- having had you visit with me on my blog!
She's a super nice lady ya'll and trust me!!! She writes oh so well!!!

Diana, when I came up with the idea, I thought X-men + Romancing The Stone. I liked the idea of a variety of creatures, too. Thanks for stopping by!
Hi Daphne, Lots of great attorneys out there, just not that many happy ones... :P I'm glad you like the story premise.
Hey Ruth A! I went up to Linda Howard at RWA and gushed she was the reason I write romance! I love that my stories are helping me meet wonderful people like yourself!
Andrea, Thanks so much for stopping by! What I love about writing is there's always another story, another pen name, etc to pursue. :)
Hi Bakin_Goddess! Today I'm taking a few moments to just be happy. To be honest, with the big marketing push I've been doing the last couple of months, I've been tired and overwhelmed and sometimes I couldn't help but wonder if it's all worth it, but getting feedback from friends I've only met because of my writing tells me it is! Thank you!
Hi Virna!
Congrats on the release! I've read some really awesome reviews on this book and I'll definitely be picking up my own copy:) I'm already excited that it is a series because I'm obsessed with series especially in paranormal romance.

Hi yadkny,
So glad the good word is getting around. I'm a sucker for a paranormal series too. Feehan, Singh, Ione, Ward, Byrd, Leigh...who'd I miss?? :)
Great interview, yous seam really down to earth,
What is the wierdest question you have ever been asked as a Author?
thebookmystress@hotmail.com
The Book Mystress, xx
Hi Book Mystress,
Thank you. I haven't really been asked a weird question yet. Most people have been pretty considerate. I loved Tanya's question about one thing I'd like to try and thought it was funny my first thought had to be censored. :)
WHAT ALL HAVE YOU DONE, DOING RESHEARCH ON WRITING?
BLACKROZE37@YAHOO.COM
Hi, Virna.
Chosen by Blood sounds exciting and thrilling; I look forward in reading it.
Love the covers for Chosen by Blood and A Vampire's Salvation. Do you work with one cover artist? How much input do you have in your book covers.
Thanks,

Great interview...and you are right...the dark and tortured only works if the character is redeemable!
mk261274 at gmail dot com
Virna,
Congrats on the release. The excerpt has sold me on CBB and I can't wait to read it.
Also the HRS books sound very interesting too, since they deal with the legal system.
I too am an attorney who jumped ship to pursue writing instead. I know of a lot of doctors and lawyers who now write full-time. LOL
Hi Kris! Awesome on your career change - I hope your writing is going well! I'm glad you enjoyed the excerpt and the blurb for the HRS. :) Thanks for commenting!
Thanks, Melissa!! Dark + redeemable = > sexy! :D
Robin, thanks for adding me to your TBR pile - it's an honored place to be for a writer!! :)
Thank you, June. Would I want to be a vampire if they were real? It would depend what my family and friends were and whether being a vamp would keep me close or away from them. If it made me powerful and able us that power for good, then I say yes!
Hi Tracy! I designed A Vampire's Salvation myself using a stock photo of cover model Jimmy Thomas and tweaking it a bit. With the CBB cover, I was asked early on what I "envisioned." I gave some feedback, but ultimately the art department came up with something I absolutely loved better. That's a good thing because, honestly, I don't think the author has all that much say in the cover, not unless you're already established and making the house quite a bit of money. :)
Blackroze37 Yes, lots of questions.
Keep them coming, everyone. I love it! :)
Hello Virna! Congratulations on the new release. I adore paranormal romance.
You must go to Hawaii. I went to Oahu last year and loved it. If you go to Oahu make sure you visit the North Shore. I've never been anyplace as beautiful and peaceful as the North Shore.

Hi Stacie, Thank you for the congrats! Fingers crossed for Hawaii soon! :)
Great interview. I can't wait to get my copy of this book. It looks so good and I keep hearing amazing things about this book.
Congrats on the release Virna. Please don't enter me to win. I just wanted to stop by and show my support.

Woot! Congrats Virna, you know I've been looking forward to this :D
My question would be, how does it feel to finally have your book out there? I know it's been a long road and finally seeing it in bookstores has to be an amazing feeling! Also, when is the next installment of the Red Hot Cops series coming out?! Can't wait for that release either!!
Thanks for the wonderful giveaway! I'd love to get my hands on it!!

Danielle, I'm so glad word of CBB is getting around. Thanks so much for stopping by!
Wenj--seeing your name is like seeing an old friend! Thanks for your support! :) Getting my book out finally feels part anticlimactic, but also surreal. When I see it in a bookstore or realize people I don't know are reading it--WOW! Dream come true. But I think life right now is still too busy to truly comprehend it. It's all good. FAB. Just need to relax and enjoy it more! LOL Oh, and I'm hoping a new RHC story will post next month. I"m behind schedule, but going to get back to writing soon! Thank you!
JoAnna, I hope you get a chance to pick it up and let me know what you think. THANK YOU!
Thank you, Jess! I love finding new authors, as well.
Pam, the books I'm doing for HSR and HQN are law enforcement series. :D
To celebrate my launch, I ran a contest yesterday most of you might have seen. To all those who commented on this interview, I'm giving away a free e-novella from my backlist: choice of A Vampire's Salvation, This Magic Moment, Love Writing, Copping To It, or Cop Appeal. If you ALSO liked my fan page, you get 3.
Please email me at virna at virnadepaul dot com to let me know your title choices.
And congrats ahead of the time to the winner of the blog post prize! Woo-hoo.
A special shout out to Tanya for hosting me here. You made my day!
Thank you to everyone for making my launch day so special!!! :D
I have NO idea how I missed this interview, but I'm SO glad I found it! I pre-ordered this book, so it could be downloaded on release day! I do have a question: Virna, do you get nervous on release day, or do you go do something fun that day? Do you do a lot of blogs/iinterviews/contests, or do you just want to get away? How soon after you finish one book do you start another? Do you take a break or start right in? Thanks again for the wonderful interview! Can't wait to read this one!
Angela, thank you so much for pre-ordering my book. I appreciate it!! This is actually my very first release day. I wasn't nervous, but I have been doing a big push to get my name out there. It's been both fun and overwhelming. I haven't actually writing stories very much, and I miss that. But I've also met a lot of new friends and readers through blogging and social networking, which I think is invaluable. My launch party is Saturday, so after that I think I'm going to sleep for a verrry long time. Then my husband and I are going away for a vacation together. I'm really looking forward to that. I'll start writing again right away just because I miss it and have deadlines to meet. Thanks so much for your interest and please let me know how you like CBB!! Take care, V
Hi Virna!! Thanks for doing the interview. Lori Wilde reccommended you, so I tracked you down here. The book sounds great, can't wait to read it!

Miss Delirious, There were times I felt my law job was sucking the life out me... LOL!! Thanks for stopping by!
Hi Virna,
Your book sounds great, I have added to my good reads to be read pile. What is your favorite book?

I would love to ask a question but I just read through all the previous comments and everything I could think of has already been asked, so I will just comment that this was an awesome interview and I really got a lot out of it! I feel like I learned a lot about what goes into writing these great books :)

Hi Keisha, Thanks for adding CBB to your TBR!! I really love so many books, but what pops into my head is Dream Man and Shades Of Twilight by Linda Howard. :)
Thanks, Julie! So glad you enjoyed the interview!!

Victoria, I'm working on the third book right now. Hoping the series will have at least five. :) Thanks for your interest!
JessS, Glad you found the tagline intriguing! Thanks so much for stopping by!
marybelle, I've got Chosen By Fate in October, but first I have my debut romantic suspense with Harlequin Romantic Suspense. Dangerous To Her is about an undercover cop who reunited with an old flame! ;)
mbreakfield, Strangely enough, no whoowhoo elements, other than just how inhumane people can be to one another. But unfortunately I've always thought that was just a sad reality. Thanks for stopping by!
Melissa, Thanks Melissa! I'm so glad my heroes are tempting to you!!! :)
First of all congrats! Really enjoyed the interview thanks for taking your time to share your thoughts with us :)
