I'm so, so excited to be able to share a "letter from the author" by debut author, Ms. Deborah Harkness, here today at Among the Muses!
Having just finished this amazing, extremely well-written, highly captivating book, I, personally, feel as though this may be the best paranormal romance book I've ever read! A Discovery of Witches exceeded every expectation I had and threw every thing I ever thought about witches and vampires out the window! (You'll need to come back tomorrow when I post my review of it!)
This is not only an author to sit up and take notice of, but a carefully crafted story that I have no doubt, will become the next highly sought after and talked about book -- and trilogy -- amongst paranormal romance readers!

Without further ado, here is Ms. Deborah Harkness to talk about her debut book, A Discovery of Witches!
~*~Book Blurb~*
A richly inventive novel about a centuries-old vampire, a spellbound witch, and the mysterious manuscript that draws them together.
Deep in the stacks of Oxford's Bodleian Library, young scholar Diana Bishop unwittingly calls up a bewitched alchemical manuscript in the course of her research. Descended from an old and distinguished line of witches, Diana wants nothing to do with sorcery; so after a furtive glance and a few notes, she banishes the book to the stacks. But her discovery sets a fantastical underworld stirring, and a horde of daemons, witches, and vampires soon descends upon the library. Diana has stumbled upon a coveted treasure lost for centuries-and she is the only creature who can break its spell.
Debut novelist Deborah Harkness has crafted a mesmerizing and addictive read, equal parts history and magic, romance and suspense. Diana is a bold heroine who meets her equal in vampire geneticist Matthew Clairmont, and gradually warms up to him as their alliance deepens into an intimacy that violates age-old taboos. This smart, sophisticated story harks back to the novels of Anne Rice, but it is as contemporary and sensual as the Twilight series-with an extra serving of historical realism.

She has received Fullbright, Guggenheim, and National Humanities Center fellowships, and her most recent scholarly work is Th Jewel House: Elizabethan London and the Scientific Revolution. Why does a history professor decide to write a novel about witches? It's a good question!
Writing a novel is a mysterious process and many of my life experiences went into A Discovery of Witches. One of my favorite books as a child was Elizabeth George Speare’s The Witch of Blackbird Pond. The history of alchemy and magic caught my interest as an undergraduate, and I'm still fascinated by these subjects today. And, once upon a time, I discovered a lost alchemical manuscript—although it was not (so far as I know) enchanted.

And, once upon a time, I discovered a lost alchemical manuscript—although it was not (so far as I know) enchanted.
A Discovery of Witches tells the tale of a reluctant witch named Diana Bishop and her discovery of a long-lost alchemical manuscript at Oxford’s Bodleian Library. There, Diana meets Matthew Clairmont: a geneticist who happens to be a very old, secretive vampire. Witches and vampires are traditional enemies, but Diana and Matthew grow closer as they try to puzzle out the manuscript's significance. Their search for answers takes Diana and Matthew from Oxford, to his ancestral home in France, to her family’s farm in upstate New York. But they are not the only creatures who want to solve the mystery of manuscript, and their fellow daemons, vampires, and witches frown upon their unorthodox relationship. Are these just old prejudices, or is it something more?
Our culture’s renewed obsession with witches, vampires, and other things that go bump in the night has been fascinating to me as a historian. I’ve gone from needing to explain what alchemy is to having my students all nod wisely whenever Nicholas Flamel is mentioned. Parents have confessed that they've been staying up late to read their kids’ copy of the latest Harry Potter. Our reading habits reveal that even grownups need a little magic—with the limitless possibility, unpredictability, and even chaos that inevitably comes with it.
My goal with A Discovery of Witches was to write a fairy tale that was mesmerizing but spoke to adult issues and concerns. I tried to create characters who were strange—yet strangely familiar. Many of us will recognize ourselves in Diana, who has so much power but is afraid to use it. Others will empathize with Matthew’s inability to let go of his 1500-year past—even though we have less of a past to worry about! And still more will wonder, while riding the train or sitting in a meeting, if that strange creature opposite just might be a daemon or a vampire.
It it's magic you need this winter, I hope that you find some in A Discovery of Witches.!

I honestly think that we will always hold the fascination that we do right now. There is something exciting about the thought that there are different creatures/people hiding among us.

I am not surprised by our interest in witches and vampires. When we read about them it takes us away to a whole other place where even the rules are different and I think that's something people want for a short period of time, to be transported somewhere else.

I am not surprised, considering how long the vampire story has been around. I don't think it will always be as popular as it is now, because nothing stays popular forever. I do think the stories will always be around, though.

OMG and Wow! The best paranormal romance book I've ever read!
T, I do not take words like that from you lightly! Now I feel like I have to read this book!
And yes of course I find it fascinating because quite simply, supernatural creatures are fascinating. The are immortal, have abilities that we can only dream of possessing, and are fueled by a hunger of a very healthy sexual appetite.
I don't see my interest wearing out anytime soon, and even if it does, it will come back like a Tsunami.
Thanks so much for the giveaway! I will be including my wish to win in my prayers. ;)

I'm not sure that our culture is obsesses with vampires, witches, etc. I'm wondering whether it's a young adult thing? I think that whether it be witches or vampires, there will always be something slightly/very scary to be fascinated with.

I think people are always going to be interested in paranormal creatures. Even before paranormal books took over the book world there was a fascination and I think it is going to continue.
Thanks for the great giveaway I really want to read this one.

Unusual? No. We have always had fascination to those things we cannot explain. This is just a fun way to appreciate the unknown.

Yes, I find it fascinating that our culture is obsessed with all the creatures that go bump in the night. I think we'll hold the level of fascination that we currently do unless someone actually proves there are such things and then it'll be either interest that's out of control, or it will become commonplace and we won't care.
I'm looking forward to reading A Discover of Witches. I've always enjoyed stories featuring witches.

I don't think it is that fascinating that we are obsessed with vampires and such. I think that obsession has always been there and will always be there! There will always be amazing authors out there to put new spins on it to keep us and the generations to come thoroughly entertained. I don't think it is that much different than any other genre...we just might be a little more vocal about it :-)
Thank you! mmafsmith@gmail.com
I think we will always be fascinated because the stories always takes us beyond our normal lives but is still recognizable so that we can relate.

SOOOOO dying to read this one!! And I'm not surprised by our obsession with the paranormal. I think from a sociological perspective we (and most cultures) have always been fascinated with the idea of magic and having power over the forces of nature...be it through incantations or through an eternal existence =)
Thanks for hosting the contest!!

I think that we are fascinated by things that go bump in the night because we love to scared. And if what is scaring us is sexy all the better.

I am not shocked ppl r so obsessed with all things dark and mysterious. As a kid back in the 80's I too was obsessed with all the horror films of the era but there were no cool YA books like there are now. Sadly all we had was Judy Blume and Sweet Valley High! lolz..There was no Twilight or Vamp Academy, etc. in my day. There were Stephen King novels some Deen Koontz but they were not YA friendly but I still read em. VC ANDREWS was our YA & Anne Rice (I got quite the intro to "adult" things in the bedroom via IVAV *blushes as a 7th grader* )
I added this book to my ereader list, in fact I think I even have it..Nope..
I really don't think it's anything new. People have been "into" the paranormal for as long as people have been alive. I just think today we look at it with less severity. Yes, I do think we will always be fascinated with this element.

I think its very fascinating that our culture is obsessed with vampires, witches and all other creatures that go bump in the night. I think we will always be fascinated by these things because we are fascinated by what we do not understand.
