Something dead this way comes…

That Old Black Magic, Book 1

For ten long years Griffin Trudeau has managed to keep his paws off Jemma Finnegan, best friend and leading star of his kinkiest fantasies. As her appointed cat familiar, indulging those fantasies with the delectable witch is strictly forbidden. But when Jemma shows up at his door with seduction in mind, control goes right out the window.

Too late he realizes making love to Jemma is the trigger that launches a zombie apocalypse.

Jemma’s been dealt a double whammy: she’s just discovered she’s a witch. And Griff has been hiding whiskers and a tail. Oh, and if her life wasn’t crazy enough, a dead voodoo queen needs her blood to raise a legion of zombies.

There’s one plan that might work to increase Jemma’s powers so she can put an end to the looming holocaust. A sexy threesome with Griff and Logan Scott, a werewolf familiar with a history of rubbing Griff’s fur the wrong way. A cat and a wolf playing nice, much less sharing? It’ll take a miracle.

Warning: A witch, tiger and wolf doing naughty things. A dead voodoo queen doing evil things. And zombies doing zombie things. Get your shovels ready.

Where do I even start? Maybe with stating, 'What a very fun, humorous, refreshing spin on zombies, witches, and familiars!' -- and read the blurb! This was my first time reading a book authored by Jodi Redford, and all it took was this one to make me a new fan!

As I look back over my notes, I keep seeing the word 'funny' like a glowing beacon amidst my scribbles. Okay, so I admit that the word 'hot' was wrote down just as many times, but I'll get to that later. So I guess I should start with the humor first in my review.

This is an author with a fantastic sense of humor. Rarely do I laugh out loud while reading, but right from the very first page to the very end, I found myself snorting, giggling, humph'ing, and smirking.

Jemma Finnegan is not your typical witch. In fact, she doesn't even know she's one until a really sexy seduction of her best friend Griff unleashes her hidden magic. And if fate isn't funny enough, she finds out that Griff is her extremely smexy tiger familiar. Yes, that's right, I said tiger. Ms. Redford has taken the tradition out of the word traditional in her character and world building. Another reason I felt like this unique little bundle of joy sitting on my Kindle was a wonderfully refreshing read.

The characters were great, simply put! The strong, very well developed heroine Jemma, is a fire cracker, full of snarky quips, a nice combination of brazenness and vulnerability, down-to-earth, and doesn't freak out that bad when she discovers who and what she is. She has a lot thrown at her in a short amount of time and takes it in stride. Even when she finds out, she's related to the dead Voodoo queen ghost trying to kill her to unleash a legion of zombies. And that the only way to truly unlock her full magical potential is to get it on with two familiars, one being Griff, the other being a werewolf familiar, Logan. See I told you that Ms. Redford put a nice little spin on familiars!

Now, I will admit that I was a little leery of Logan. At first I didn't like him, and I sure as hell wasn't so sure I liked the fact that he was getting in the mix of Jemma's and Griff's new found relationship that had its own issues. But, trust me when I say, my opinion completely changed as the story progressed. And while I'm on the subject of this oddly matched threesome, dear Lord, does Jodi know how to write some serious hotness! I thought my ereader was going to seriously melt for a few pages! Okay, more than a few pages! *fans self in remembrance*

Griff, for obvious reasons, isn't exactly on board with Logan's presence, which makes for some serious tension. Jemma is his to protect - in more than just his familiar duty. Not to mention, he is extremely territorial of his new found mate. Too many years has Griff longed to make Jemma his, and his alone. Now, when he finally has a fighting chance, he's not willing to throw down the gauntlet. Griff is a fantastically strong counter-partner to Jemma, with strong determination, a slight disposition of dominance combined with a healthy dose of compassion, endearment, and hotness.

The secondary characters only add to the humor and quick moving plot. In fact, Jodi did a fantastic job at making me feel one way at an initial introduction of the characters, and was able to change my judgmental opinion by the end of the story. Bottom line is, Jodi created secondary characters that enhanced the story and never felt like they were side-line players, or stagnant in development.

The plot and unraveling of events and character growth were action packed,  consistent, moved at a nice pace and kept me turning the pages. Plus, the humor kept me wanting to find out what would happen next! And while I may be talking a lot about the laughable moments in the story, you also are part of some frustrating and heart-tugging ones as well. The ending took a path that I wasn't expecting which added to those emotions - in a good way!

The only major issue I had was that I was hoping for more witchy 'fire-power' from Jemma after Logan helped..amp?..her up. She did have a unique gift that saved the day though, but I'll leave you to find that out. And I should point out that there is an epilogue that will definitely leave you asking questions, and wondering what's to come in the next book of the series!

~*~Final Thoughts~*~

Obviously, this an adult content book, and if you're uncomfortable with graphic sexual situations and ménéges, than this may not be for you. But, if lots of hot smexiness appeals to you, and you're looking for a very fun,  action packed, upbeat, quick, very funny,  spin on witches, zombies, and familiars, I definitely think you need to pick up this little jem of fun! I am officially Jodi Redford's newest fan, and I'm looking forward to checking out her other reads, and the next book of this series.

Great review Tanya!

I have mixed feelings about friends to lovers plots but the added bit of a third in this relationship has me intrigued.

I'm so glad to see your review of this! I'm trying to read as much as I can about witches, and this sounds like a perfect fit for me!

The blurb sounds great, and I'm a big fan of humor and meneges... opps, I mean...

*blushes*

@VFG -- Yeah, I too, often have a hard time getting into stories where the characters are friends before, but you aren't really given any back story with these two main characters, so you kind of feel like they're discovering one another for the first time.

@Missie -- I think your funny bone will like this one! It's very light-hearted, and actually has a stronger focus on the zombies than the witches. In fact, I forgot to add this in my review, but one thing I wish there was more of, was Jemma using her 'powers'. Logan was there to add the extra... amp?.. so afterwords, I was hoping for more Jemma fire power so-to-speak. But, overall, it was great!

You did a fabulous job at making me laugh, sweat, and go 'awwww'. And, yes, thank God you were able to convince me to love big old teddy bear Logan, because I have a feeling I'll be seeing him real soon, huh?! *winks* Oh - and you should definitely tell the hubs that I think you're funny! :P
