Do you have a favorite store or publisher you buy books from? Have you tried a variety of different places, but tend to find yourself returning to a favorite? Are you afraid to purchase ebooks from certain places? Do you support small publishing houses? I want to know!
Recently I added a tab to the blog titled "eInfo", where I've created links to a few of my favorite publishers and book stores that I love to browse and buy from. But even then I noticed that I tend to 'favor' certain sites. Whether it's the ease of navigation through the site and store, the variety of formats available for download, the company policies, or just the overall love of the genres and/or authors, I'm honestly not sure what the ultimate driving factor is.
With all of the eStores and publishing houses, I have little, if any, experience with the way in which they treat the authors during the publishing process, or the customers in terms of problems they experience during their purchases. All I know, is that I've never had any problems as a customer in any of my purchases from any pub sites or online stores. With this conclusion, I can say that 'problems' I've encountered doesn't factor in to my decision.
However, regardless of my experiences with different companies, I still tend to favor a couple of them. For the most part, I know that the authors and genres play a HUGE factor in my purchase trends. There are a couple of authors that I will buy pretty much anything from, so that plays in to the trend, I'll follow them where ever they publish. And of course genres and writing styles are equally just as important to me. With these couple of factors in mind, I find myself continuously returning to Samhain and Loose ID. Recently I've added Lyrical, Ellora's Cave, and All Romance Books to that mix, but still, I predominantly return to Samhain.
I must also include one of my own fears here, and that would be the way a publishing house sets up their book presentations and shopping carts. If the shopping cart format looks like an inconvenience to navigate, or if they don't offer a variety of formats to choose from, then I have a hard time hitting the 'buy' button. Another factor for me not purchasing ebooks from certain places is often due to the lack of information. I honestly don't understand how publishers expect readers to purchase a book with a lack of a blurb, cover, or any additional information that may help me as a reader decided if this is a book for me.
As for large retail stores, I hate to even admit this, but I tend to buy about 90% of my ebooks now-a-days from Amazon, and all my print books from Barnes & Noble. While I have both the Nook software and Kindle software as ereaders, I think it's safe to say that my decision isn't necessarily influenced by the difference in software. Although I do tend to lean toward the mobi/Kindle version due to presentation and format. But, even with the large percentages of my books still being purchased through Amazon, I'm finding that the more a small publishing house offers the mobi/Kindle version, the more that I am willing to purchase from them and not Amazon. Therefore, I'm finding myself slowly buying more and more from these small ebook publishers. Not to mention, I like to support the small companies as much as I can so they stay in business!

So, with all my rambling, I was wondering... What do other people tend to do? Do others, like myself, have a preference from where/who they purchase their books from? Do people follow companies, authors, or genres loyally, playing in to their own influences in their purchasing trends? Or are people still leery of purchasing ebooks from small publishing houses?
I would absolutely love to know what, how, and where other readers purchase their books from through any of the questions I've posed.
Giveaway Contest:
And in the spirit of purchasing ebooks, my new found love of My Book Store and More (MBaM), and my silly curiosity of seeing how their unique online gift certificates work, I am going to offer up two ebooks from MBaM, to two people who leave a comment answering any of the questions I've asked, and participates in any of the polls on the left sidebar.
The books will be the winners choice, you just tell me what book you want from the store. But I will be using their unique gift certificates by sending specific amounts. I'm being completely silly and just needing to see how this works! :)
Obviously, this is open to anyone, anywhere. Giveaway ends Wednesday, Oct. 20th.
That's all. Easy-Peasy!!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts and experiences!

What an interesting post! I can honestly say that being a Kindle owner has definitely redefined how I buy books completely.
I pretty much exclusively buy digital books now and probably 90% of those come from Amazon. Being able to buy books directly from Kindle is a big part of that, but a lot of the Kindle books on Amazon are also free or heavily discounted so there's that too.
In terms of publisher, Samhain is a big winner for me as well- you can't beat their prices and they have an awesome array of authors and stories that I love.
I would love to support smaller publishers or buy directly from authors but I'll be honest, I haven't done enough research or poking around to be ready to do that yet. I'll definitely have to check out the resources you've compiled as that seems like a great place to start!
I have a kindle so most of my books are boughrt direct from amazon but there are still a few that i buy from such places as siren publishing or samhian as they are not only cheap but have so many good books!
Hmm, I never really thought about it, but I do tend to stick to a few places when buying ebooks. Harlequin, BoB, and the Sony Reader Store are where I shop the most although I do compare prices when possible. I've never tried the smaller publishing houses, I don't really know why....maybe I'll give them a try :-)
Hey, Tanya!
Great post! I am totally in love with All Romance eBooks. The 3 main reasons are great selection, pay with PayPal option, and their "buy 10 books get one free" deal. (I went on a BDSM shopping spree there today!) They also have "eBucks" you can buy and sent to others as gift certificates.
I own a Nook, so I do buy lots of eBooks from Barnes & Noble. I buy my print books from them as well (I'm a member of their rewards program). Since buying my Nook I don't shop at Amazon like I once did, though I'm sure they'll get by without me just fine!
From time to time I shop at Ellora's Cave and eHarlequin - and Borders.com too. I found out you can read their books on the Nook. Yay!
Thanks for visiting my, so I thought I would return the favor!! I don't buy e books, if I ever read them its usually from net galley or author requests or from the library. But I usually shop at Barnes and Noble. Hope you have had a great weekend!!!
I haven't bought any ebooks yet but when I do it will probably be through Amazon.. Tore923@aol.com
Wonderful post Tanya and i too have a few places i return to on a frequent basis. Mainly because of certain genres i read, for instance, I heart M/M and Dreamspinner Press and Loose-Id have got great quality M/M stories. I buy general erotica mainly at fictionwise.com They have a great variety in ebooks and formats plus, I don't know if its a recurrent event but last year in December they had fabulous discounts up till 60% As you can imagine, I went crazy LOL The format my e-reader can handle has some influence where to buy too but if its all possible I love the multi format e-books :) As I'm a european citizen I can't buy at amazon or barnes & noble...or at least, I don't think so. So that has effect on where I buy too :)
I really don't tend to purchase a lot of ebooks as you can get so many for free now. Also I review so I get a lot that way.
I can speak though about how the publishers treat their authors and Samhain is one of the best. (my husband is one of their authors)
I don't really have a pattern for shopping for ebooks because I don't have an e-reader. Until I get myself a Kindle or something (don't really like the apps on my iphone too small), I have only been getting the free ebooks.
Great post, Tanya! And maybe you won't believe it, but I'm working on a blog page myself about ebook stores - also from an European point of view, because we're 'banned' from some stores. Leontine already mentioned Amazon and B&N, but at places like Fictionwise and BooksonBoard we can't buy all books either. Some aren't available due to geographical restrictions.
Still, those are two of my favorites along with All Romance ebooks, because of their diversity in ebooks from different publishers.
Aside from those I also like to shop (and support) the stores from smaller publishers (especially for my m/m smut) like the ones Leontine mentioned and also Amber Quill Press, Samhain, EC, MLR Press. But also the self publish store Smashwords.
As for formats, I usually get pdf or epub, and I prefer buying DRM free books so I can read them on every device I want without too much trouble. :)
I shop from a variety of ebook sellers ...
I do tend to stick eith an author that i enjoyed reading ...
There are no Small publishing house..there are only too little books published by them :)

I pretty much alweays get my ebooks from Amazon cause i have a Kindle. I do look at some other sites but I don't usually buy frrom them. Amazon is usually cheaper but I admit I haven't checked out MBaM yet. I hear about it all the time though. I'll have to check them out!
